A familiar skyline. A journey of your own.

The UK can begin with a view you already recognise: London beside the Thames, a castle above Edinburgh, or an old street that invites a slower walk. The interesting part is deciding which of those places belongs in your own journey.

Rather than trying to cross the whole country in one visit, choose a few experiences that fit together. A city break, a history-focused route and a countryside holiday need different plans. Start with what draws you there, then give each stop enough time.

Find the places that speak to you.

London: begin beside the river.

London brings together major landmarks, museums, neighbourhoods and green spaces. A riverside walk is one way to organise a day around an area rather than a scattered list of sights. Choose the visits that matter most and leave time between them.

Edinburgh: another city chapter.

Edinburgh offers a different setting for a city stay, with historic streets and the castle as a focal point. If you combine it with London, make the journey between them a deliberate part of the plan rather than squeezing it into an already full day.

York or Bath: choose the story that interests you.

Look at York and Bath when exploring possibilities beyond the larger cities. You do not need to include both. Compare the attractions you want to see, transport connections and accommodation before deciding which fits your route.

A quieter chapter.

If countryside or coast is central to the trip, build around a particular region instead of attaching a distant excursion to a city stay. Check how you will reach the places you want to explore and return to your accommodation.

Shape your journey.

Compare arrival and departure airports alongside the route between your chosen bases. For each move, include check-out, getting to the station or airport, the journey itself and reaching the next accommodation. A short list of well-connected places is a useful starting point.

Before you book, read the route as a complete journey: arrival, transfers, check-in and the time you actually have to explore. Our multi-city planning notes can help you connect the stops without filling every hour.

The practical side, made clearer.

Choose accommodation for the journeys you will actually make. Look at the walk to transport, access with luggage and the evening return, as well as the room itself. Keep an indoor alternative for outdoor plans and check opening arrangements for visits that matter to you.

Use the official resources below to check current opening hours, booking arrangements and visitor information. Transport schedules, attraction access and individual booking terms can change; confirm the details for your own dates.
